Synopsis:
My story, as I imagine it, is fundamentally about coming of age and about addiction. In college. With vampires and earth-spirits, or at least the descendant of the latter and definitely several of the former. The addiction? It's to vampires, not drugs. And that is the extent of my planning.
I solemnly swear that I will not name my protagonist "Titmouse Sapsucker".
Excerpt:
They were in a corner, kissing, when the grandfather clock in the hall started ringing. It was midnight. Simian pulled back and smiled slyly. “Want to see something cool?” he asked.
“Yes?” She said uncertainly. His smile widened. Hers faltered when he said,
“Don’t scream.” And then she saw why. His canines were extending, becoming longer and sharper. She took a nervous breath.
“What—”
“I won’t hurt you,” he said quietly. “But you’re not leaving here either,” he added as she tried to stand up. He gripped her arms and forced her back down. “Everyone in here is either a vampire or a snack.” She glanced over to where she saw Diego. He saw. “Yes, Diego is one of us. Look at me.” His voice held a command that she couldn’t argue with. She met his eyes, and instantly felt better. Her fear fled and when he pulled her forward she went with it, even going so far as to wrap her arms around his neck. With one hand he brushed hair aside from her throat, and with the other he tilted her head back and to the side.
Then he leaned forward and bit her. She moaned. It hurt, a little, but not much. And soon enough, it just felt good. She felt her body go slack as sucking sounds continued at her throat. For the first time since she’d left home, she felt safe, and a barrier somewhere inside her fell—
And the world exploded.
Suddenly she wasn’t sitting, wasn’t in the arms of a vampire who was feeding on her. She wasn’t even in her own body, she was everywhere, and no where.
And she was screaming. She couldn’t help it. There was a blinding mixture of light and dark, and somewhere that was both outside of herself and inside, someone was screaming. No, not someone. Someones. A thousand, a million voices were in her head, telling her that they were dying and she had to save them, to get rid of the creatures who were poisoning them, to remove this blight from the land. Colors came to her, bright colors, from every color in the spectrum and many outside it. Almost every one of them was darkened in a way that she could only think was bad, very bad.
