Ranikalle
an excerpt
Rækella sat at her desk in her study, manipulating raw energy in her hand. Calling forth multiple symbols in her mind, she transformed the energy into the six main elements; fire, water, earth, wind, light, and darkness. She felt a severe pain in her side and, losing her concentration, the energy broke its form and scattered into the air. She frowned. She hadn't lost control like that in a while. She could cast that spell in with any number of pains circulating throughout her body so why did one small throbbing sensation trouble her so much?
She lifted her shirt slightly to see what the problem was and surprise crept into her facial expression when she saw the reason for it. Her curse mark was breaking from its binding spell again, and sooner than it should have. She'd have to go see a healer soon enough.
"Rækella, come on!" Rovæl called her friend. Rækella snapped out of her trance and hurried to catch up with her best friend who was already out the door of their housing unit. "We're going to be late!" she called again.
"Hey, wait for me!" Rækella called out as she ran after her. She had been so caught up in her boredom that she had forgotten about the meeting. She paused for a moment as she composed a quick spell, pulling signs out of thin air. In moments a sudden breeze picked up and quickened the steps of herself as well as her friend.
"Woah," Rovæl called out as she lost her balance for a moment. "Could you at least warn me before you do that?!" she called back at her friend.
"Sorry," Rækella laughed. "I thought you just wanted to go faster."
Rækella's pace slowed as she felt a throbbing on her side. 'Shoot, already?' she questioned in her head.
Both Rækella and Rovæl made it to the spot on time and practically fell to the ground, panting and gasping for breath.
"What do you girls do everyday to make you this tired before school?" their friend Aelik asked. "You guys look like you're about to die every morning!"
"Shut up," Rovæl told him, jokingly of course.
"I honestly couldn't tell you," Rækella gasped for breath once again, this time a little more forcefully due to the throbbing in her side.
"Isn't it beautiful?" Rovæl stared at the purple glow that appeared over the blue gel-like substance that was visible as far as the eye could see. "It matches your eyes Ræ," she told her friend.
"Yeah…" Rækella was also looking out at the natural formation. It formed in aquamarine droplets that were suspended in the air. The rest of the substance formed a pond that, if anyone touched it, would change into the colors of the rainbow as well as colors that no one had ever seen before. Amy race could shape it into anything they wanted to once it touched their hands.
"What is this stuff anyway?" Aelik asked his friends.
Rovæl dipped her hands in it. "I don't know exactly," she appeared to be in deep thought.
"Don't hurt yourself," Aelik teased.
Rækella hit him playfully and Rovæl stuck out her tongue at him. "I think it was a new substance that formed here when this island split apart from Lekanthæ," Rækella answered. "What do they call it, crael, or something to that effect?"
"Hey, I was going to say that!" Rovæl complained. "I think it's used for medicinal purposes… but I'm not sure," she got out before yelping in pain. "Ouch, that stuff stings!"
"Really?" both Rækella and Aelik questioned, picking up some of the substance for themselves.
"I don't feel anything," Rækella responded and dropped the crael back to where she picked it up and ran the characters for water and disinfectant across her skin. She didn't trust that stuff at all. Aelik wiped his hands on the grass beneath him.
All three friends felt one huge vibration ripple through the ground beneath them, scattering them in different directions. Rovæl's scream could be heard as Rækella and Aelik flew through the air.
Rækella landed with a hard thud and arched her back in momentary pain. She had hit her head when she fell and her vision was becoming blurred.
