Write Me a Letter
an excerpt
Outside, Janice said, “Wow, Mavis. I don’t know how you did that?”
“I merely asked at the most likely place, I can’t claim any great detecting skill from this success although I admit that I am pleased.”
“I didn’t mean that. It’s great that you found it of course; me mum’ll be well impressed. So am I. What I meant was to lie like that, you didn’t flinch or anything.”
“I did not lie, Janice.”
“She thought you were my mum.”
“I didn’t correct her misconception, but I didn’t lie.”
“Well, not exactly I suppose, but come on, Mavis you did forge her signature.”
“I did not. I don’t know what your mother’s signature looks like. I simply signed on her behalf in order that her property might be returned to her as swiftly as possible without causing her the inconvenience of returning to the shop.”
“And there rests the case for the defence your honour,” said Janice.
They both giggled.
