“We’re without magic,” Alexa’s grandfather used to say, “All we have is what we are.”
Alexa’s friend Samantha had thought of this as soon as she met her freshman year roommate, who seemed to believe in charms, crystals and spells to cure every ailment and help her pass every class. Samantha had never believed in that kind of thing, preferring to think she was getting by on an unbeatable combination of hard work, pure luck, and sheer determination not to look like an idiot by failing in front of everyone. Her roommate, it seemed, didn’t see the distinction between magic and luck, and Sam, nervous about having to actually live with the girl for a whole year, did not try to convince her there was a difference.
