Burning
an excerpt
She woke with a start as the sirens began. The roar of the fire trucks was nearly deafening as it broke the silence of an otherwise peaceful night. Instinctively, her hand stretched out beside her to where her husband should have been lying, if he had not been on one of the trucks on his way to put out the fire. She rolled over and grabbed her Bible off the nightstand. Holding it close to comfort her, Jane began to pray. She prayed for her husband, his strength, his sense of duty, and his safety. She prayed for his coworkers, his brothers as he called them, and their families. She prayed for the victims of the fire they were off to fight, that they were safe and that their lives would not be lost nor ruined. Mostly though, Jane Campbell prayed that her doorbell would not ring this night or any other because that would bring news she could not even let herself think about, though it was always in the back of her mind each time he went out the door, helmet in hand.
