Escaping Davenport
an excerpt

Sweat trickled down my chest as I ran, my legs intermittently stung by bushes yet it did not impede my legs from running. A case can be made that survival instinct took over my whole body, representing as a talisman of strength although it could also be the hand that was pulling me and the sound of the heavy breathing matching mine beside me that was giving me the strength to keep on running.

I glanced behind, and saw from afar, a dark figure moving viciously forward towards us. My heart was hammering increasingly inside my chest as I felt the determination of this person to reach us. Suddenly, the floor came crashing down upon my face as I collapsed from the treacherous roots and loose stones I did not foresee. A crunching noise was enough to inform me that my ankle was broken. I shut my eyes as I winced from the pain and when I opened my eyes, the scene changed before me and the hand that was gripping mine tightly was gone.

Two men were in a death grip in front of me, knife ablaze between them. Tears streamed down my face as I called for one of them. The man, the one on the ground, yelled for me.

“Charlie, GO!” the man cried.

“No…please” I pleaded with him.

“Charlie, you have to run. Charlie... RUN!” he managed to choke out as he dodged the knife for what seemed like a dozen of times.

Tears were streaming down my face as I pleaded with the man, struggling hard to stand up. I can’t leave him. I won’t leave him. Even if I wanted to, my legs will make that highly impossible. I have to do something. I need to help him.

“CHARLIE!” the voice was getting louder and louder now. It felt as if I were about to go deaf as my eardrums were threatening to burst. “CHARLIE!!!”

--
“Charlie, wake up!” Penny cried as she shook her shoulders roughly. “Charlie!!”
