In The Shadows
an excerpt
He’d waited long enough. The lights had gone out over two hours ago and she hadn’t left the building. There was no one else in the building that she could have gone to see. She had to be sleeping. He made his move.
Out of the car, across the street. No need to rush, make it look like you live there. Your heart does at least. Pause by the door. Even her name is beautiful, the letters arranged just so to paint an image of the beauty it belongs to. Can’t help but touch it, careful not to touch the neighbours – they’re undeserving of your touch. Key out of your pocket. So pleased the day you got this, almost like the key to her heart. Through the door, careful now. Make no sound.
He slowly closed the door behind him, desperate not to make a sound. No good could come of any attention he drew to himself at the moment. No, he had to stay in the shadows until the time was right. These things took time, he had to be patient. Some days it was hard. All he wanted to do was let the whole world know how he felt, that he loved her and that she loved him. She hadn’t been able to say it yet. How could she? She didn’t know him well enough, he knew that. But she would and when she did, she would love him with all the passion that he loved her with.
