The Other Dead Guy
an excerpt
From the Prologue:
"He thought he must look like a praying mantis perched on a Twinkie."
From Chapter 1:
"Alex sat in the driver’s seat, his hands tight on the steering wheel. His ill-fitting suit coat—another inheritance from his father—pushed upward, so its shoulders didn’t touch his shoulders, but pressed against his ears instead. This upward thrust pushed his beard out in all directions like a Victorian ruff, and gave him the appearance (from the chin up) of a severed head on a platter. Since Alex was a naturally cadaverous man, his eyes deep in dark sockets, his fleshless nose displaying the contour of bone through tight skin, his cheeks drawn in like sheets on a clothesline, he looked like an animated corpse anyway. This effect was betrayed by the plumes of steam escaping his nostrils, and by the almost imperceptible quiver emanating from his spine, which he tried to neutralize by clutching the steering wheel with all his might. If he let Rebecca see that he was cold he’d have to admit she’d been right—that he should have worn a warmer coat, that he should have worn his gloves, that he needed a different car."
