Verity
an excerpt

I spurred Black and leaned over his neck. He threw himself forward and snow flew beneath his hooves. Wait a minute, I thought. Butch used to be a race horse! Darn it! Mary sped ahead and I got an idea. If I cut over the fence instead of riding all the way back to the gate, there was no way she could beat me, not even with the faster horse. I reined him away from the path. Oh God, I thought. Please let my horse be able to jump. We raced towards the fence.
