When Ruby opened the screen door Thursday night she banged the toe of her clog against a lump of wood that Benny had hammered into the middle of the rotting threshold and was propelled with arms flailing wildly into their tiny living room.

"Benny, what did you do?" She stood up shakily. The mail was splayed across the scratched wood floor. She bent down and out of the corner of her eye she saw fangs. Big fangs. They belonged to a wild-eyed bear with a salmon-colored tongue twice as long as his fangs.

Benny ambled in with a can of pop in his hand. "What's going on?"
