Synopsis: The Live-In Ghosts
When the Grayson family moves to Concord, MA, their oldest daughter, Ellie, is indifferent to the spooky noises in her house and the imaginary cats her little brother insists that are there. All old houses creak, and all little kids have imaginary friends, right? Yet when the ghost of Robert, who died at age 17 in 1940, goes to Ellie for help, she must forget everything she knows about ghost stories to help him regain a human form.
Excerpt: The Live-In Ghosts
After a minute of lying in bed, I turned to face the wall like I usually do. There was a strange noise and I tried to ignore it, like I usually do. But then suddenly my feet were freezing and there was a very forced, nearby cough. I bolted upright, just like I had this morning, and there was a cold, shining, pale boy sitting at the end of my bed.
He held out his hand towards me, and said, “Hi, I’m Robert.”
I squeaked. Really it was an attempt at a scream, but I felt like my throat was closing up. I pulled my feet from underneath him and to my chest, but he didn’t seem to notice a difference, and for that matter, neither did I.
He scrunched up his face a little, and said, “Well, I was hoping you were going to be a little more perceptive, but maybe I was expecting a little too much. Maybe I should just… go?”
He started to float towards the windows in the back of my room.
He was hoping I was going to be more perceptive? I would have been pretty freaked out if I found any old boy at the end of my bed late at night, but… well, I don’t believe in ghosts, but certainly he wasn’t human. And now he was leaving.
“Hey, you. Ghost. Wait!” What, the hell. Why not, right? He could be Casper, right?
“I told you. My name’s Robert, not ‘Hey, you, ghost,’” he said, slightly annoyed, though he did stop.
“Robert, right. What do you want? Why are you here?”
“Don’t you know how to introduce yourself? Now’s the part when you tell me that you’re Ellie, and that you’re very pleased to meet me.”
“How do you know my--”
“I live here, don’t I? I’m not stupid or anything. Though I was hoping you people would be a little more observant. I’ve been moving around your stuff for weeks. Least the kid noticed the cats.”
“You live here?”
“Yeah.”
I didn’t know what else to say, though he was still looking at me expectantly. And then it occurred to me.
“Well, nice to meet you, Robert. My name is Ellie.”
He smirked. “Nice to meet you, too, Ellie. Now you probably want to know why I’m here, right?”
“Well, yes.” I figured it would be futile to point out that I asked him that about five minutes ago.
Suddenly, his face became very serious. “Well, Ellie, I need your help.”
