Excerpt:
“Winnifred! Winnifred, child, wake up!” This was accompanied by a loud knocking. Winnie rolled over onto her stomach and pulled one of the frilly pillows on her bed over the top of her ears. She moaned and shut her eyes tight, hoping it would all go away.
“Breakfast is served in the east wing, then we will work on your studies. And do not come looking like you just rolled out of bed. We do not want a repeat of last night.” Winnie heard the clicking sound of her mother’s shoes walking away, down the hall. The temptation to go back to sleep was great, but the possibility of severe scolding was even greater, and mush less pleasant sounding. At this thought, Winnie pulled herself up and out of bed and over to the wash basin by the window to wash the sleep out of her eyes. She got dressed, then headed downstairs, reluctant to begin another day of study, but she walked quickly, in hopes of avoiding reprimands from her mother for taking too long to get up. “It is not proper or lady like to stay in bed past nine o clock, Winnifred. Do you want people to think you are a lazy girl?” Yes, Winnie had heard that from her mother many times in variation. What a threat: Having unspecified people make opinions about her that she could not care less about. Winnie was less than moved by the thought.
