Excerpt: Gargoyle Moon

We’ve lived in my grandparent’s house for as long as I can remember. They’d moved out of the groaning old Victorian to a brand new two bedroom house on the ritzy, expensive southeast side of the city. Growing up, my mom read a lot to my brother Sean and me. I suppose we both had active imaginations, though we both grew out of it as we grew up. Sean had always been the strange one, and the smart one. He used to say weird things when we were little. We’d be in the living room, playing monopoly, and his hand would freeze on the little metal horse and he would stare over my shoulder. When I asked him what was wrong, he’d say,
“Hey, Maddie, do you see that?”
Whenever he asked me that, there was never anything there.
