The gulls’ cries echoed off the rocks as they dove, shrieking, over the steely water. Their dirty white against the channel water stood out like shifting spots of mildew on a dark marble tile. Occasionally you’d spot a nobler-looking bird with iridescent azure plumage – a sea kestrel. These had a more piercing cry, and they dove faster, plummeting, until they pulled up and away just above the crashing sea.
