Prologue
Crystal held the knife in her trembling hand but couldn’t remember picking it up. She had no idea why a knife, dripping with blood, could have possibly been put in her hand. For surely it had been put there. There was no way Crystal Carrington, wife and mother to three, daughter to Wendell Coventry, heir to Coventry Industries, could possibly be holding a bloody knife. But there it was. In her trembling hand. All Crystal could think was ‘whose blood is it?’
Crystal dropped the knife in the sink and grabbed a towel. Tentatively she made her way through the kitchen to the door leading to the living area of the house. Crystal couldn’t even remember how she ended up in the kitchen in the first place. She didn’t even know how to cook. That’s what cooks were for in Crystal’s world. The maid or the cook would clean up the blood on the floor and the counter in the kitchen. Crystal just knew she needed to make her way out of the kitchen and find her way back to what she last remembered. Surely the dinner party had been a success. It was critical that it be a complete success. Mark’s political future depended on it. Mark Carrington, Crystal’s husband was on track to becoming the next Governor of Maine. And Crystal was doing everything in her power, with the help of her family, to make sure Mark was elected Governor.
But first Crystal needed to find out how she had ended up in the kitchen with a bloody knife in her hand.
