Prologue:

Grauter stood in front of the control panel to the injector. Every day it was the same thing: inject, record, collect. When he signed up to work for the government in the experimental department, he had grandiose visions of actually getting to work on something cutting edge, something sexy, or at least something that had the remote possibility of exploding at a moment’s notice. But instead he was stuck in the control room at the injector station, injecting, then waiting for the computers to do all the rest. When the project had first started fifty years ago, it was so controversial, so cutting-edge that creatures from other systems would kill to work on it. Now, it was a forgotten experiment. Enough data had been collected to allow the scientists to make judgments on how successful the operation had been. Now it was all down to monitoring, but the computers were able to do all of that. Grauter turned to the monitor where the latest Kerian drama was playing.
It was too bad for Grauter that there was still one creature who would kill for his job, and the dark figure was about to do so with an un-sexy, un-exploding, but very cutting edge knife…
