Synopsis:

There is a man who has no identity of his own; he can only relate to the world by assuming identities from stories.

Excerpt:

Jesus and the Devil were relaxing one day. Their work in the Grand Courtroom was difficult, and the two lawyers needed some time to relax and blow off steam. The cases that day had been difficult, and Jesus’ plea as the defense had be been met by firm rhetoric from the Devil as the prosecution, and the courtroom had been adjourned for the day. This time, they were walking by a river, laughing and talking about this and that, trying to forget the troubles of the courtroom. Jesus looked out over the water and saw that the fish were jumping, so he said to the Devil, “which of us do you think can catch the most fish in ten minutes?”

The Devil studied Jesus for a moment. “No powers?”

Jesus nodded. “No powers. Loser gets supper for the winner”

So the Devil agreed. Jesus quickly fashioned a crude fishing rode, and within a few minutes had caught his first fish. Meanwhile the Devil jogged off towards town. Jesus tried to watch him for a time, but the fish demanded as much attention as he could give. At nine minutes he’d caught a healthy pile when he heard the Devil approach again and greet him. “Your time’s almost up” he said, not turning from the river.

“I know” said the Devil. “Watch me for a moment though.”

Jesus looked up to see the Devil holding a whole crate of fish, freshly bought from the market. He tossed the crate in the air, caught it deftly, and winked at Jesus.

Jesus laughed. “I should have remembered to word the challenge carefully around you! Alright, you win this one, I’ll buy you dinner.”
