Synopsis: Cry of the Magi
In Rahian, there is no black and white, only shades of grey that come with living in a land as unforgiving as hell itself. A noble queen condemns thousands to live beneath the city to keep her seat of power, and the ruthless usurper gives them a chance at freedom. It is Ava, a magi without so much as a spark of magic, who takes up the usurper's offer.
Denying her family and her faith, Ava takes up the cause of freeing the magus, a race of magicians who were imprisoned underground over half a century ago by the late Queen Esma. She journeys to the forbidden lands where no living thing has dwelled for centuries, to retrieve what the Consul Azriel asks-- an object of power known by her people as the Sikh'kau.
Her quest may see her become the messiah of her people, the pinnacle of good in a merciless world, or it may see her become the scourge. Only time will tell.
Excerpt: Cry of the Magi
“Stop, or I’ll have to behead you.” Ava said, attempting fierceness. The man didn’t look convinced, in fact he was laughing. “I—I mean it.” She raised the sword to his neck, the tip scraped his skin.
“Don’t make a fool of yourself, you know as well as I do that that sword you’re holding is about as lethal as dice snake.” The man said. Ava wondered what kind of man this was, to casually brush off an attacker. He must have stared much worse fates in the eye to treat her so nonchalantly. “At any rate, I have you beaten.” He pulled out a gun, and aimed it at Ava’s head.
Ava dropped the sword, wincing as her only weapon clattered to the ground. “Fine, you win. Just don’t shoot.”
The man holstered his gun. “Wouldn’t dream of it, you amuse me too much to consider it. Now, if you would just go sit down and be a good hostage.”
