Excerpt: Revolutionary Moon

Pain ripped through his body and he let out a howl, loud and clear in the early morning light. Again his bones broke themselves and reformed as human, his face shrinking from that of a canine to that of a man. His hair receded and disappeared back into his skin and suddenly he was doubled over and fell to his hands and knees sobbing. There were still flecks of blood on his chin from where the rain couldn’t reach. He was prone and naked when he heard footsteps approaching, but couldn’t look up to see who or what was approaching. Passing out from the pain, he didn’t know if he was safe or not, but he couldn’t find it in himself to care.
