Excerpt: Heed My Words

It began, as many things do, with a corpse. Granted, this was not a real, true corpse, but it was enough to perturb me. I stepped over the body as I walked through the door into the other side of the bar. The body moaned, trying to get my attention. I ignored it and proceeded to set up the bar for the day.
The corpse moaned again.
“If you want to get my attention, you probably ought to do it in a better way than lying on the dirty floor pretending to be dead rather badly.”
