Satan's Webcam
an excerpt

She heard someone behind her scream. In spite of the high pitch, it was a man, and he was staring at the sky with a look of frozen horror, the kind only seen on people who truly believe they are doomed. She looked up as well. There in the sky, like so many deadly basketballs, were thousands of balls of fire, dropping down on the horrified populace. She turned away, looking around wildly for a place to take shelter. A breath later, she calmed down enough to look more systematically, but a fireball crashing into the asphalt behind her shook her up again. She ran a few feet, then realised it was useless without a plan. Another one hit the car just in front of her and it burst into flames. That was when she realized that there was a parking garage around the corner behind her. Not the world’s safest place - but better than nothing.
She spun around and took off as fast as she could, her feet hitting the concrete with careless slaps, then hard lunges more felt than heard. She hugged the building, and dodged a streak of red she though was a man but couldn’t be sure. She skirted a crater as fast as she dared, and avoided a flaming wreck. It went up with a FOOM! as she passed, and one of her arms was singed. She tried to bat it to put out the sparks with the other hand while running, and didn’t find that overly effective. Another lunge, then two, and she was around the corner. A fireball, a small one, hit the wall not two feet behind her. She pushed her legs harder, and grimaced as she barrelled into a man running for the edge of the parking structure. For a moment she thought for sure she was about to die. But she was safe, he was safe, and only a bit scorched in the process. They crawled the rest of the way in, then backed up a safe distance and watched the carnage outside.
The man was fidgeting, shifting from foot to foot, and jumped every time there was another boom. Connie could understand, but wanted to slap him, or anything, to make him stand still. She was looking in the other direction when he gasped, and only turned in time to see a person collapse, covered with fire, just outside. They tried to stand up, and he rushed over, but when he tried to drag them to safety, he had to let go and jump back, the heat was so intense. He waved his hands in the air and rubbed them against his sweater, perhaps afraid they too were on fire. But before he could try to help the person again, another fireball struck, and the person was engulfed in flames so intense he had to dance back, and the bush at the entrance caught fire as well.
The man stood there crying, and Connie just watched him for a minute, then took off looking for a fire extinguisher. She ran to the other side of the parking garage, then to the opposite corner, and finally found it in the third corner on the side she’d started on. She ran back with it, but by the time she got there, she’d felt the characteristic twinge of death and knew it was far too late. But the man, crying, seized the fire extinguisher anyway and used up all its contents, spraying and spraying as though it might bring the person back to life. She stepped back, shaking her head. Then her body started to shake, and the blood throbbed in her head as more and more people died around them. It seemed like the entire city was dying.
