Synopsis:

8 year old Julie and her family are suddenly uprooted after her Dad loses his job in Chicago. In order to pay the bills, they need to move. Only the move takes them halfway around the world to a small village near an excavation site in Eygpt.

Excerpt:

Julie looks around, “Where are we living Dad?” John stops nervously, “Well Jules, the house we are living in is totally different from the houses you are used to. There are no indoor bathrooms, no windows with glass, and very small rooms.” Julie shrugs, “I know all that. Mom told me we would be living in a little hut and we wouldn’t have all the things we had back in Chicago.” John sighs, “I don’t think any description can adequately describe our new house.” Liz grabs his hand, “John it doesn’t matter where we live so long as we are together. We will love it no matter what it is.” Julie pipes up, “What does adequately mean?” John smiles at Liz, “It means well enough.” “So you mean you can’t describe our house well enough?” Julie asks. John says, “Pretty much. You will have to see it to understand.” Julie grabs her Dad’s hand, “Well then let’s go!” The three of them walk past a few more houses and turn a corner near the end of the village. There, the very last house sits, with a curtain hanging in the doorway. “This is it,” says Julie’s dad. “Why is there a curtain in the doorway in this house?” Julie asks. John answers, “I haven’t been able to get used to people walking by and looking in my house just yet. I put the curtain up the second night so I could get some sleep.” Julie examines what is going to be her new home. It is a small house, that is for sure. There is one small window on the left side of the door. The building is similar to the rest of the ones in the village in that they are made of wood and metal. There are even some small holes where the metal or wood pieces seem to be too short. “Do I have my own room?” Julie asks. John pulls the curtain back, “Come on in and see for yourself.” Julie walks in to the small building. It takes a minute for her eyes to adjust to the darkness. Once they do she can see she is standing in a small room that appears to be a living room, dining room, and kitchen all in one. There is a ladder and a door off to one side. Julie goes up the ladder and peers into the space above her. The ladder goes right through a square hole in the ceiling.
