Synopsis: Always A Hero
The adventure happened years ago... But the story is only beginning.
Ten years ago, the kingdom of Suenya was beset by a horrible sorcerer who called himself Arabesque. With his woven powers, he terrorized citizens, swindled himself great riches, and even beseiged the King. But Cora Dorado, a young girl from our world and a miraculous "Pure Soul," journeyed to his castle with the help of several plucky adventurers, and defeated him with the "Transcendent Banishment" spell. After bidding Suenya farewell, she was gently made to forget her adventure, so she could go on living a normal life.
Now, Arabesque has broken free from his prison and has returned to reign in fear over Suenya. Only Cora could ever cast the "Transcendent Banishment" and trap him forevermore. There's just one problem: She doesn't remember ever being a hero.
Sucked back into Suenya after ten long years of forgetfulness, the now-grown Cora (a cynical, bitter college student) suddenly has to contend with legions of friends she doesn't remember having, thousands of admirers who adore her for deeds she doesn't remember doing, a sorcerer who despises her despite her not recalling having met him, and an entire world resting on her shoulders... despite the fact that she can't even remember how to hold her staff! Will she be able to reclaim the knowledge her ten-year-old self held... Or will Suenya's most decorated hero fall prey to her own unwillingness to believe?
Excerpt: Always A Hero
Now what? In all the fantasy I’d ever encountered (which amounted to the second Lord of the Rings movie), you knelt before people like this. I sunk to one knee out of respect, and nearly overbalanced myself.
The taurustaur mimicked. But the fairy, elf, and dwarf all went flat to the ground. As did the people directly beside them. And the people next to those people. And the people next to and behind those people. And everyone.
Chills bit everywhere on my back.
“All hail the savior, Miracle,” the dragon said sedately. Its eyes nuzzled me. “Welcome back, Your Sorcerousness. We are honored to be counting on you.”
“Your, uh, Draconicness,” I ad-libbed. “If you knew who you were speaking to… You probably wouldn’t be. …No one else is.”
“Nonsense,” the dragon said. “No matter what you have forgotten, you will always remember. Thoughts and memories do not make a heroine; bravery and honor live in the heart, where no spell can touch them. Once a hero, always a hero. Look to your Pure Soul, and you will find your strength there.”
Huh. Guess I shouldn’t have expected fantasy without words from a Wise Mentor somewhere. Though Gandalf had a beard.
