Excerpt:

The following morning, Olivia was back at the police station target practicing. She was trying to reenact what had happened the day before, but to no avail. As she finished unloading the clip, the speaker went off. The dispatcher summoned all the units to a hostage situation. It warned that the suspect was armed and dangerous. Olivia picked up her things and ran out.
As Olivia arrived on the scene, some of her fellow officers were already there. She walked up to her captain. He explained that the suspect was a man named Darren and that he had a woman held hostage at gunpoint in one of the rooms towards the back of the house. The captain ordered Olivia to try and negotiate with Darren.
As a sergeant, Olivia had gone through extensive training. She was appointed the youngest sergeant at the precinct because she was able to excel at everything she was taught. She became not only an expert marksman, but also, among other things, became skilled at the art of negotiating.
As she reached the back of the house, she saw some other officers surrounding the doorway to the room that Darren and the hostage were in. She could hear the yells of the man and the shrill cries of the crying woman.
She approached the doorway and tried to make contact with Darren. She managed to find out that the woman was his girlfriend and that she had cheated on him. He was trying to get revenge. Olivia tried to plead with Darren to let the woman go; however, he insisted that he would not do anything until the other police officers left. Olivia ordered the rest of her team to leave.
She tried again to talk Darren out of the room, but it seemed that he was just making demands and had no intention of letting her go. He began to tell Olivia that he was definitely going to kill the woman, but that he was going to make her suffer first. Olivia looked through the doorway and saw Darren holding a gun to the woman’s head. He moved it to her arm and fired. The woman screamed in agony. “Darren, don’t do this!” Olivia yelled.
It seemed as though Olivia was running out of options. She decided that she would have to kill Darren before he killed the woman. She looked through the doorway to try and get a clear shot at Darren; however, Darren would fire blindly at her whenever she did so. Darren was getting more and more hysterical. It would not be long before he finally put a bullet in the woman’s head.
Olivia began to think about what had happened at the shooting range the day before. She concentrated and pictured Darren in her mind. She pointed the gun straight ahead, away from the doorway and Darren. She pulled the trigger and heard a body hit the floor. She looked through the doorway again. The woman ran past her screaming. She looked in the room and found Darren on the floor with a gunshot wound in the middle of his forehead.
