An American junior high school student, deeply affected by his best friend's brutal murder by a mob of classmates, moves with his single mother to Tintagel where he discovers his unique abilities and helps his new friends find their own strengths. Allusions to Merlin and Arthurian legend.

Excerpt: Merle

“Yes, so Merle, what has been going on?”
“Did you see on the news? The story about the kid they beat up and set on fire?”
“Yes, that was terrible. Did that have a special impact on you? Are you afraid because of it?”
Merle stared blankly at Doctor Vincent. “I saw it happen. They killed my best friend.”
The psychologist glanced down and quickly scribbled something on her pad, but before she turned her head Merle noticed the color drain from her face. She was afraid – afraid she was in over her head, Merle suspected. And if so, she was probably right.
