Excerpt: Equinox

The phone rang as she was finishing her coffee. It was the rescue line, not the house line. “Equine Rescue, can I help you?”

A child’s voice met hers. “Are you the lady that rescues horses?” The voice was timid, afraid.

“Yes I am. Where are you calling from? What happened?”

Sniffles now. “He won’t stop beating her.”

Startled, Kady drew in a calming breath. “Who won’t stop beating whom?”

“It’s my neighbor,” whispered, barely audible.

Kady found herself whispering back to the child. “What’s he doing?”

“He has a pregnant mare, and he -- the mare--” Sobs now.

“It’s going to be okay, tell me your address.”
