Excerpt: The Brownstone

And then she heard it. The sound that made her heart stand still and her hair on the back of her neck stand straight up. A sound that she would never forget for the rest of her life and would haunt her just like the memory of the night her son Peter had died. It was the sound of a gun going off, the loud piercing bang that went off not just once but three times in a row. The scariest and most terrifying sound Maggie had heard of her entire life. After that a lot of running could be hard, followed by the screams of horror on discovery of what had happened. People were shouting in the hallways, yelling for the police and calling for an ambulance. Maggie headed towards the door to see what was happening, terrified about she was about to find out but not being able to stop herself. She knew one thing for sure though, it was going to be a night that Maggie would also never forget for the rest of her life.
