I knelt and placed the bouquet of white roses on the fresh mound. "Good bye, Mama." I placed my hand over the bouquet, then pulled it back. What else was there to say? Sighing, I stood back up. A shaft of sunlight broke through the clouds and I realized that it had stopped raining. The sky was still mostly dark, but that one ray from the sun warmed me enough so that I could smile.
I drove back home and walked in the door. The emptiness hit me as soon as I turned the lock. There was Mama's chair in living room. She had refused to stay in bed those last few days. Her glasses still lay on the table beside the chair, along with her sewing scissors and her Bible.
I walked through the house, turning on all the lights as I passed each room. When I reached my room, I couldn't take anymore. With a sob, I collapsed. I was truly alone now.
