The Wild Adventures of Katamari and Torasshu
an excerpt

There was a pounding on the door. In the darkness, Katamari sat up in bed and unerringly reached for the switch that activated the lights for their room. They came on in two stages, first a dimmer setting followed by a flicker into full brightness. She swing her little legs around and hopped off her bed, landing in her slippers, right where she had left them.
"Torasshu, wake up," she said to her brother, who was still asleep in the bed next to hers. He didn't do much more than grumble and roll back over. The pounding on the door came again. "Torasshu!" She yelled this time, using the tone of voice that usually got a response from her brother. It worked, this time just like the others.
"I'm up, Mari, I'm up," he said from beneath a pile of blankets.
Before whoever was pounding on their door could do so again, Katamari pressed the release button and the door swished open.
"Good morning, Will," she said, rubbing her eyes. "Why are you beating our door down?"
"Why? You've overslept!" Will stormed into the room and started pacing back and forth between their beds and the washroom, three steps one way and three steps back again. Torasshu always joked with Katamari that they should move their beds a little closer to the washroom just to see if Will would trip and fall.
"Have not," Torasshu said from his bed. "I set the alarm clock myself. We have another twenty minutes before we dock with the Winchester."
"Twenty minutes?" Katamari screeched. "Tora, I thought you were setting the alarm with enough time for us to get ready?"
"I did. I can be ready in fifteen minutes." He finally sat up, his head poking up above the piled mass of blankets he slept with. On any other day, Katamari would find his blonde hair, so mussed up after a long nights sleep, humorous.
"Fifteen- Tora, I swear-"
She was interrupted by his laugh, so boyish and playful, as he leaped out of bed and dashed past Will into the washroom. Before either of them could make a move, he'd locked the door.
"Wha... I... Will.. Tora..." Katamari couldn't get a word out, she was so angry right now.
"Grab your clothes and head over to my quarters," Will said. "I'll let the Captain know you'll be late. We're behind schedule anyways, won't be docking with the Winchester for another hour, but I want to run everyone through a docking drill before we attempt it first."
Katamari let out an ununtelligible scream this time, glaring up at Will. She grabbed a book and tossed it at his head, then scooped up her clothes and stormed straight out of the room and into the hallway, taking a turn towards Will's quarters.
Twenty minutes later she stepped onto the bridge of the Komaatsu. Torasshu was there already, his uniform rumpled and greasy as usual, standing just behind Scarlett, the Komaatsu's chief engineer. All her anger returned to her in that moment, seeing Torasshu so assured and at attention while she was forced to be rushed and late. She hurried to her seat next to Will's station; as Commander and second in command of the Komaatsu, he was responsible for navigation, and Katamari, as Junior Navigator, was trying to learn what he could from him, just as Torasshu was learning all about engineering from Scarlett. Just as she settled into her seat, she heard the raw scrape of Captain Hasho's claw foot on the deck plating as he rose from his seat.
"Little Katamari, I see you is late today morning, but your brother was in here in good time."
Katamari started to explain, her voice rising, but she was cut off by a quick swipe of Hasho's hand. "I no want stories from little girls this morning," he said. "You late, little clump, and next time you late, little clump spends day cleaning washroom in Captain's quarters. Understand, little clump?"
