As a dare I am including a penguin in my novel however I decided instead to do a penguin themed superhero, but I can't think of what super powers he could have other than swimming, oh and please don't say trick umbrellas.

Flying would be a superpower to a penguin.

Super-sonic belly sliding. He dives forward and slides on his belly at the speed of sound, with perfect control.

Bonus points if this is his key power, and he can only do this on ice.

Jumping ashore after swimming.

Attracting tasty, tasty fish.

Keeping his bare feet warm in adverse conditions.

Somebody mentioned belly-sliding, so I'll add projectile vomiting on command (Blind bad guys! Or at least gross them out! And feed the children too!) and insensitivity to cold. Or you could say he has super-endurance...not as showy as super strength, but potentially more useful. He can't life up a car, but he can hold a good-sized bike over his head for a week! (At least, I assume penguins have super endurance, since they, you know, walk for miles and miles to sea and back...)

And of course, his weakness is leopard seals.

He can frighten leopard seals by making himself appear as an orca.

I agree with the first poster. I think flying would be cool. Either flying like superman or the superpower gives him workable wings when he needs them.

Super fast waddling?

Consider they're arctic creatures, you could do something completely inappropriate and give the penguin flame-breath, melting the ice around him and others.

DEFINITELY the barfing, especially if it was super-glutinous barf that trapped villains on the spot until law enforcement arrived.

Or maybe he can just lean back and flap his wings (arms?) so fast that it causes a super-strong super-fast wind that blow anything away, with precision, like a super-snow-blower.

A penguin superhero; that's inspired. Promise you'll post a scene for us?

I love the idea of a Penguin super-hero! Or a Super-villian too I suppose. I agree with the first poster about the flying (which really would see Super to a penquin.) Another idea would be perhaps sonar (I'm thinking of the Incredible Mr. Limpet here).

I was at the zoo recently and noticed that the penguins had the ability to swallow fish whole. Perhaps you could combine the whole fish swallowing and the vomiting into a fish projectile power?

He could have a monocle that filters sunlight into an intensive hot beam that can set fire on his enemies (seah, I admit that that's a monocle power but if you won't have the trick umbrellas I thought off straight away, he should at least have the monocle.) And maybe you should consider him being a smoker.

His henchmen should be an army of penguins (and perhaps a circus freak show)

Either he's a computer guru, or he has a henchman who is. In the latter case, of course, said henchman is named Tux. (For those of you who just heard a "whoosh!" as that went over your head, the mascot of Linux is a penguin named Tux.)

I second the suggestion of a Linux reference! The ability to telepathically call computer nerds to his side?

Heheh. I'm all for powers that he needs to be in the cold to take advantage of... but what if he's not actually resistant to the cold himself? Could put him in quite the predicament. >:)

He could vomit different types of matter - food for his young, glutinous gunk like someone else said to entrap something and maybe even nuclear puke to defend himself against Godzilla! Nuke Puke!

Sideburns and Elvenwonder that really just made my day. I don't know whether to laugh or to cry about the fact I got that.

Penguins are cute right? Maybe he can temporarily stun people with his cuteness?

Oh or maybe he can summon Morgan Freeman!

Having an overpowering stink of fish. I interned at a zoo once and all the interns live in one house. When we all got home from work we'd sit around in the living room, but whenever the penguin kids came home, we banished them to the showers.

They're also really good at biting people.

Well, not to state the obvious, but how about the power to freeze the bad guys, like Mr. Freeze. But, that's been done, so, good luck.

Your penguin has already got the tuxedo, I think being super-suave like James Bond is neccesary.

Bouncing. He has enough body fat to get the bounce going really well. It would speed up his land rate.

He has a marksman's precision with fishbone shooting using his beak.

Does he wear a bow tie?!!!

i do not think superpenguin automatically has invulnerability to cold. his body is warmed by his special power: firebreathing. admit it. you would freak out if you saw a penguin cooking his fish before he ate them. or cooking his enemies before he ate them...

I haven't read through the whole thread, but I hope someone mentioned Iceman's powers? An iced up Penguin that can produce ice, melt into water and travel through oceans at a blink of an eye, and create his own rails to belly sled on would be awesome. His arch-nemesis could be Global Warming.

Penquins seem to fly under water so why not out of water. Also, they could probably shoot icey breath which would temporarily freeze their opponents?

I adore penguins and have even had my collection in a case at the library. We're getting penguins at our freakin' zoo!

Whatever you do, at some point you *must* have a Morgan Freeman ("March Of The You-Know-Whats") voice-over insertion, possibly heard by no one except the penguin.

Please. For me.

One of my best friends is one of the penguin caretakers at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. I'll ask him if he has any ideas that would make good super powers.

I know one thing for certain, penguin guano is possibly the worst smell ever--I always make him leave his shoes and socks outside.

PS--One of the aquarium's penguins "Yellow-Yellow" is mentally retarded. Her parents abandoned her as a chick, and she's...pretty much a penguin failure, she doesn't have much balance, she doesn't swim underwater, and she's the only adult penguin in their colony that doesn't have a mate. I find this very sad. You should include poor Yellow-Yellow in your story and make her find her one true love.

Ever seen Happy Feet?

It'd be cool if your penguin-superhero could sing or tap dance and somehow save the world with that. Bonus Points if he doesn't even realize he has this power until he uses it to save the world.
