Why not plot kittens, or plot cockroaches or plot something-elses?
I know it may be a stupid question, but I have always wondered about that one, ever since I saw it here.
(oh, and moderators: feel free to put this in the right category, I didn't had a clue were to put it.)

Oh wow! I want a PLOT COCKROACH!
Not that I'm particularly fond of cockroaches (although I don't think they're the grossest things on the planet, either...), but that just sounds cool.

ugh ... plot cockroaches sound like the BAD ideas that multiply ... like when the "twist ending" is aliens.

I always thought it was because bunnies are elusive, and plots can sometimes be, too. The breeding thing makes sense, too, though

I figured it was because of the breeding thing, yeah - but plot cockroaches do sound cool! They're like the unwanted plot ideas that are just _bad_ but still come to mind. Or creepy enough to make you wonder whether you've been staring into the abyss for long enough.

Apparently, to skin a bunny, you just take a handful of fur from its belly in each hand and rip. It's like an old sheet. I've never done that, but I was talking to a hunter the other day. I just don't look at bunnies the same anymore. Poor critters.

Plot bunnies breed like rabbits most of the time. Plot cockroaches are the horrific ideas, Mary Sue characters, and poorly-thought-out 'brilliant ideas'.
Plot kittens are, I am told, related to the zombie apocalypse.

Not a silly question at all. I think it's becauseplots have a tendency to gather in the back corners of your mind like dustbunnies under the bed when you're not looking. The more bunnies the better for plots...

Because rabbits can get violent when cornered. They can kick rather hard, claw, and bite much more fiercely than a hamster. Plot bunnies are also vicious if you try to corner them to get rid of them, and when enough of them exist to form a swarm they turn into bunny-locusts that will devour any non-plot-bunny ideas in your mental landscape.

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh! From now on I'm going to have Plot Tribbles :)
and what with the way my attempt at the Snowflake Method turned into the Snowball Rolling Down a Mountain Method, I could just start throwing Plot Trbbles down the mountain instead of snowflakes - they's already round, so they'd catch more ideas better on their way down, plus they'd multiple as they went - just think of all the ideas I'd have by the time they reached the bottom! Spock would think this all very illogical, but it makes perfect sense to me ;)

Apparently the idea came about from the John Steinbeck quote: "Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen." I don't know how much truth there is to this though. XD

I can't think of it being anything else but plot bunnies. I have to explain it every time to anyone I talk to that doesn't write much. It greatly confuses them. However, I think it does come from how bunnies breed like crazy.

I desperately need an actual bunny to sit on my desk and be my mascot/inspiration/familiar. Not a LIVE bunny, but a bunny-shaped thing. I should've thought of this last Easter, when I could've picked up a cute little stuffed thing from CVS or something.

I could also reference to "Rabbit Trails" which is what happens when you story suddenly deviates the straight path and goes careening into the woods, across the water, through a STEEL CAGE OF DOOM, looking for a Free Shrimp Dinner, and finally ending up with The Last Post.
See, even this post hit a rabbit trail!!!

I call them plot cats. Because one will spawn many. Some will be friendly and some will be mean and vicious. But they are just so cute!
MY plots anyways, I rarely have an evil or gruesome one. It's who I am.
