This is a challenge for everyone who wants to help out NaNo and get writing at the same time. I wonder if anyone will like this?
- Every day in November, you search every noun of the first three and last three sentences you write that day with GoodSearch.
- If your first three or last three sentences have less than four nouns total, you use the first/last five sentences instead.
If you don't know what GoodSearch is: If you click on http://www.goodsearch.com/?charityid=845878 every search you make will give the OLL (you know, the awesome guys who run NaNo) a penny. Meaning this challenge doesn't only make you write - because we all know that the first sentences each day are the hardest - you also help NaNo out. :)
I also hereby challenge myself to write at least ten nouns each day within my first and last sentences.

This is a fantastic idea! I love GoodSearch, and I've used it for OLL in the past. I just now downloaded the GoodSearch toolbar, so now I'm ready for action! Thanks for the great idea.

Gotta do this idea. So simple and its so helpful too. I wonder how much money we could raise in total for NaNo if everyone on the forums did this challenge?
Count me in. (oh, wait... now I have to come up with an idea for a novel, AND follow through. Guess I got to this year, no failing!)

Ooh, quite the idea. I don't know if I can get ten nouns into a sentence and keep it making any sense xD but yay money for NaNo!

Heh, yeah, I've already had my toolbar switched to Goodsearch rather than google and since I use it pretty extensively all the time, I feel good about it. Might as well use goodsearch when you're looking for ideas for your novel, or doing homework, or if you know the site you want to look at but don't know the URL, just goodsearch it. Another penny for the cause. I figure if I do about 5-10 searches a day on average, (which I already do) then I'm at least helping out.
Doesn't OLL get their goodsearch check in December? So we have three months between now and then to add our part, and I know during EdMo I'll probably end up using my searchbar a lot too, so I'm feeling pretty pleased with myself.
*goes to convert more people
EDIT- fabi60, this is NaNo. They don't have to make sense, that's the best part (because I know my novel is going to be so full of filler... egads!)

I'm glad people are liking this idea. :D
I'd have gone for something different than nouns - my original plan was every word in the setence - but I double-checked with GoodSearch and they say they take off charities if the searchers do searches just for the heck of it and as I know that I tend to use words like "the" and "a" a lot (like probably everyone else), I had to go with nouns to be on the safe side.
And yes, I'm already using GoodSearch as well. ;) It's just that I search too few stuff to get a big amount of money together and want to contribute at least a bit more this year, since I'm unable to really donate.
So let's get searching! ;D

So excited that someone came up with a way to optimize goodsearch. Being 17 and trying to save up for college next year, I'm not able to send thousands of dollars into the admins like I'd like to, but this is a nice easy way to raise money. Trying to get my friends to use goodsearch, too.

This. sounds. GREAT!! Oh, I'll be procrastinating till midnight every night thanks to this. *cheesy grin* But I'll have fun, especially since some of those nouns will be essential searches for the novel!!

I just installed the GoodSearch tool bar on my laptop. I do research on a daily basis for my novels, (many searches!), so now I know the OLL will benefit. :) I'm a creature of habit, so it might take me a little while to remember to use it, (the toolbar is on the top left part of my screen, whereas Firefox is smack dab in the middle!) I just have recondition myself.
But I make a vow to do just that. :)

I really hate to throw a wet towel on this, but:
I don't know what they consider a fraudulant search, but this sort of challenge surely borders on it.
I will, however, begin using Goodsearch for my more legitimate searches, of which I have a multitude during NaNo.
So kudos for the good intentions, but please do be careful. We don't want OLL delisted!

It's written as Office of Letters and Light, that's NaNo's official nonprofit name.
GoodSearch can certainly be my search engine for the month (goodness knows I do plenty of searching even without research).

Random, Odd, Possibly obvious Question:
We can use GoodSearch even if it's not for NaNo, right? Like, say, after November, we can still keep on using it, right?
Thanks. I kinda feel awkward asking this, but...

Of course. You can search for NaNo year round (and it would be a great thing to do, too). Of course, you could also pick another charity, but...:P

I kind of agree with Ruth Cooke on this one. The challenge could be seen as a bit dodgy by them.
----------But given the amount of novel research that most of us will be doing through november (and even now in just the preparation for noveling) if we all just make sure that all of that legitimate searching gets done with goodsearch it should accomplish much the same thing and without the risk of delisting.
There is an exception to every rule.
But there are some exceptions.

So I have checked out Good Search and done a direct compare and contrast to Google.
I am not very impressed with the search results for Good Search. However, I am trying to search at least two items each day while at work (even if it is random stuff I don't realy need) just to help boost the NaNo donations.
I also don't like adding stuff in my toolbars. I have them set up just how I like, so I won't be adding the bar.
So what I am really saying is that as a search engine it is not for me but as a charity to help out it doesn't take much of my time to mosy on over and get them to give NaNo some cents on my behalf.
Thanks
