Excerpt: Dreamweaver Legacy: The War Of Blood

They had barely covered a few hundred meters when two dark blurs descended from the sky towards them. The first had feathers that were black with a red sheen and the second was smaller, and coloured in lighter browns and greys. Whilst the smaller remained in bird form, its sharp talons bared the other span in mid air and landed in the horse's path, a tall human looking creature holding a very long and nasty looking lance. The rider pulled on the reins, the horse reared up and stopped in front of him. The Scaris that had remained in bird form was now trying to get through the protective bubble, each time its talons hit the surface it produced a sharp ringing noise as well as a flash of light. The Scaris that had taken up human form called out.
"Bhest, enough. He's put everything into that shield; you'll never break through..." His voice was coarse and rough, like the call of a crow. Bhest withdrew, spinning in mid air and landing in human form next to the other. This one was female, dressed in brown and black leather and was holding a cruel looking whip. The rider pulled the horse back a step or two, petting the animals neck as it whinnied in discomfort. The female Scaris spoke, her voice was slightly more lyrical than the males.
"Jardin, what do you propose we do now? He is, after all, defenceless..." She cast her eyes around the trees, being able to see quite well in the dark unlike the rider, and could see no-one else hiding amongst the trees.
"Such a stupid little prince..." Jardin began, playing with the blade on the tip of his lance whilst he spoke. "Leaving the safety of his castle without any guards. I wonder what father would say about that..." The prince's face remained impassive, holding his ground now as he stared to the two in his path.
"The Scaris will regret this; you are impeding me on an official mission. The rules are clear about interference...."
"To Hell with the rules!" snarled Bhest, cutting across him. "We know what the little brat is, and what threat she poses to us so why should we not interfere?? She could destroy the Scaris!"
"She's still just a child Bhest Stormwing; her fate is not yet known." The prince continued calmly. Bhest let out a sharp cry and lunged forward, only to be pulled back by Jardin. Still the prince didn't move. Jardin looked over to the prince with azure blue eyes, speaking equally as calmly.
"Letting her live contradicts the treaty, and your father knows that." He kept one tight hand on the back of Bhest's shirt as she snarled angrily.
The prince moved his cloak, pulling the small bundle out from underneath. Wrapped in layers of thick woollen cloth was a small baby with a shock of blonde hair, sleeping ever so peacefully. The prince looked at her with a small smile, taking the crystal from around his neck and draping it over her head. She shifted in her sleep slightly, her hand closing over the crystal as it began to glow brightly. The prince looked back up to the two Scaris.
"That is for the Eternals to decide. For now...my sister will live."
Jardin smirked slightly, releasing his grip on the back of Bhest's shirt, letting her lunge wildly at the prince. Just as she reached him, for the second time that night, a shadow seemingly dropped from the sky in front of him, landing on Bhest with a snarl. Pinning her to the ground, Tarra looked over to the prince, his eyes urging him to run.
"I can hold them back for a few moments Prince Nava, run! My mistress waits for you..."
Nava nodded to the cat creature and dug his heels in Lafwyr's sides; the horse reared up and bolted forwards, almost trampling over Jardin.
He dared not look back as he heard Bhest screeching, Tarra tearing at her with his claws. Jardin transformed back into bird form, speaking to Bhest in Scarian as she managed to throw the large cat off of her. She changed back, one of her wings slightly bent as they both shot up into the stormy sky, following after Nava as fast as they could. Slightly winded from Bhest's blow, Tarra got to his feet and began to run after the prince. The sooner they were both within Mistress Garland's circle of protection, the sooner the Scaris wouldn't be able to find them. Nava was holding the bundle underneath his cloak once more as he kept silently urging Lafwyr to run faster and faster, the trees beside them becoming blurs. A screech came from behind them as a black cat burst from the trees, keeping pace with the horse. Nava looked down to the cat for a moment before looking back ahead.
